How to Maintain Your Boat

Owning a boat is considered to be a luxury for those who enjoy spending time on the water and taking in the beautiful views. Although boats are fun to use, they also require plenty of upkeep to maintain the different parts. When you want to keep your boat running and in good shape, there are a few steps to take.

Keep It Covered

Use a durable cover on your boat when it’s in storage and is not in use in different seasons of the year. A cover will protect it from damage and wear due to exposure to environmental elements.

Change the Oil

Boats need to have their oil changed regularly to keep the engine running well when it’s in use. Check the owner manual on how to change the oil and pump out the oil and use marine grade oil on the engine. The oil should be changed every 50 to 100 hours to avoid repairs that may be needed.

Wash the Boat

Although your boat will spend plenty of time in the water, it should be washed regularly with fresh water to remove salt that can sit on the surface. The boat should be washed after every outing to protect the paint and the different parts. You’ll need a brush that has a long handle and has soft bristles to remove salt residue without scratching the surface of the boat. Use marine boat wash or car wash soap to clean the vessel thoroughly.

Inspect the Propeller

The propeller should be removed every month or two and whenever you plan to take the boat out on the water. Check to see if old fishing line has become caught on the propeller to prevent it from becoming wrapped around the propeller shaft. It’s also necessary to check for nicks or dents that have occurred.

Waterproof grease should also be applied to the propeller to reduce the risk of corrosion, which can cause it to stop working. You’ll then need to reinstall the hardware and different parts. You can also replace anything that is missing or broken by shopping for discount boat parts to make the vessel run like new again.

When it comes to owning a boat, it’s important to keep it running well by taking the right steps. With a high level of care that is provided, you can increase the lifespan of the vessel and continue enjoying it for many years to come.
